Housed within Sharjah’s first airport building, the Al Mahatta Museum is an aviation museum established in the year 2000 highlighting the history of flight in the UAE and the region. The airport was used in the 1930s as a staging post for commercial flight routes from Britain to India. Sheikh Sultan Bin Saqr built a rest house, known as The Fort, to accommodate the crew and passengers for the overnight stop. The first stopover in Sharjah of a passenger flight from London’s Croydon airport to India was on the 5th of October 1932. In 1940 the British Royal Air Force built its own facilities adjacent to The Fort and extended the runway. In 1956, a new Control Tower was opened, which operated up until the new Sharjah International Airport opened in 1977. After this time, the fort was abandoned and was restored and opened as a museum in 2000.

This historic mosque is nestled between Khor Fakkan and Dibbah Al Fujairah and is the oldest mosque in the UAE, with its construction dating back to the year 1446. It boasts a unique architecture style with four domes, making it a popular tourist destination for residents and visitors alike.

Both the amphitheater and waterfall face Khorfakkan’s shimmering bay, so visitors can enjoy a wander along the beach before enjoying a spectacular show.

A unique way to explore Khorfakkan’s mountains, Cloud lounge is a recently built mountain-side rest stop that lies 600 meters above sea level, offering panoramic views across Khorfakkan.

As you pass through the entrance, you will find a range of wonderful facilities including a luxury restaurant. The complex, built with a carefully-designed, safe road includes viewing points along the way.

Historical houses built of silt and stones, dating back more than a hundred years, are in the process of being converted into luxurious modern accommodation for guests to experience a glimpse into the traditional life of the region. Within a short walk, you can reach the top of the mountain where the upper fort, used to defend the village some three centuries ago, was located.

Heading toward Khorfakkan on the new Sharjah – Khorfakkan highway opens up a vista of the beautiful Al Rafisah Dam. Originally built in the 1980s, the dam has had an upgrade with a new visitor centre and rest area. Travel time from Sharjah to Khorfakkan has been reduced to 45 minutes, due to the new road, allowing more visitors to enjoy the serene pleasures of the area where a large, clear lake with boating facilities is overlooked by the magnificent Hajar mountains. The scenery is unmatched with the sandstone mountain range looming over a pure azure reservoir with its accompanying tranquil green landscape and man-made waterfall, perfect for nature lovers and outdoors enthusiasts.
