Stop At: Al Ain National Museum, Al Ain United Arab Emirates

The oldest museum in the country contains an adobe fort, an oasis, and three main sections:

Archaeology: you have exhibits from the Stone Age to the founding of the UAE, artifacts from Mesopotamia, the Bronze and Iron Ages, prehistoric jewelry, flint tools, 8,000-year-old arrowheads, or the oldest known irrigation techniques (falaj, plural aflaj) with which Al Ain flourished and allowed the construction of its characteristic adobe buildings.

Ethnography: Explore the traditions, customs, education, agriculture, medicine and daily life of Emiratis and how much has changed in just a few decades.

Gifts: An exhibition of the gifts Sheikh Zayed received from leaders from around the world, including a moon rock given by NASA.

The Qasr Al Ain fort is the former palace where the father of United Arab Emirates Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan resided. As a museum, it is dedicated to his life and memory, and incorporates modern elements in its design but without neglecting traditional Emirati style and techniques.

Desert and camels are probably the first things that come to mind when you think of the emirates, and certainly Al Ain’s camel market gives you the opportunity to observe this iconic animal up close in a fascinating place where buyers and sellers trade camels by the hundreds and often stage camel races.

Stop At: Al Ain Oasis, Central District, Near to Al Ain Palace Museum – وسط المدينة – أبو ظبي – United Arab Emirates

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it stretches across 1,200 hectares and offers a unique glimpse of the region’s inhabitants who began to dominate the deserts 4,000 years ago. The oasis is home to 150,000 palm trees of different varieties, and is maintained by the traditional aflaj irrigation system, which transports spring water from the Hajar Mountains. The Eco-Center explains the characteristics and history of the place and its inhabitants.

Stop At: Al Jahili Fort, Sultan Bin Zayed Al Awwal St, Al Ain United Arab Emirates

This 19th century fortress was transformed into a cultural center and now houses a permanent exhibition dedicated to Sir Wilfred Thesiger, the intrepid explorer, travel writer and photographer who, with his Emirati and Omani companions, crossed the world’s largest sand mass, the Rub’ al Khali (literally, “the Empty Quarter”), twice in the 1940s. The fort also houses a temporary exhibition gallery. Surrounded by a lush park, it won the prestigious Terra Prize for contemporary architecture in raw earth.

Stop At: Jebel Hafeet

Located on the border with Oman, its 1,240-meter peak makes it the highest in the emirate, and to reach it there is a winding road rated as one of the best in the world. The view from the top is something you will remember for a long time.
